Industrial Brass Anti-Oxidation and Color Stabilization Technical Solution

Release time:2026-03-13Click:25

I. Chemical Passivation (Most Common & Low Cost)

A dense protective film is formed on the brass surface via chemical solutions, without affecting dimensional accuracy, making it suitable for mass production.

1. Chromium-Free Passivation (Recommended)

Principle: Based on molybdate, tungstate, organic phosphonic acid, or silane coupling agent.

Effect: A transparent to pale blue conversion film forms on the treated surface, which can resist neutral salt spray for 24–72 hours (depending on the process).

Process Flow: Degreasing → Acid pickling & activation → Passivation (immersion or spraying) → Pure water rinsing → Drying.

Advantages: Eco-friendly, low cost, retains the original metal color, suitable for assembly-line production.

2. Benzotriazole (BTA) Treatment

Principle: BTA forms a complex protective film with copper.

Application: Often used together with passivation solution or as a post-treatment step.Dissolve BTA in alcohol or water (with cosolvent required), then dry after immersion; it effectively inhibits atmospheric corrosion.Especially suitable for applications requiring high tarnish resistance, such as electronic components.

II. Electroplating & Electroless Plating (For High‑Demand Applications)

Used when brass parts require decorativeness, wear resistance, and extremely high corrosion resistance simultaneously.

  • Nickel / Chrome Plating:Prime with matte or semi-bright nickel first, then plate with decorative chrome.Completely isolates the base material with excellent weather resistance; suitable for sanitary ware and hardware.

  • Electroless Nickel‑Phosphorus Alloy Plating:Uniform coating without edge effects from electric current, ideal for complex‑shaped workpieces.High hardness and corrosion resistance; commonly used for precision components.

  • Tin / Silver Plating (For Specific Functions):Tin plating for solderability; silver plating for electrical conductivity.Note: Anti-tarnish treatment (e.g., antioxidant dipping) is required after silver plating.

III. Organic Coatings (For Large Areas or Heavy-Duty Corrosion Protection)

  • Transparent Varnish Spraying:Acrylic varnish or polyurethane varnish is commonly used industrially, applied via spraying, dipping, or flow coating.UV absorbers must be added to the varnish to prevent yellowing.Suitable for large brass sculptures, architectural decorative panels, and signage.

  • Powder Coating:For industrial parts requiring thick coatings and high weather resistance (e.g., outdoor enclosures),transparent powder coating can be applied via electrostatic spraying and then cured by baking. The coating is hard with strong adhesion.

IV. Temporary Protection (During Storage & Transportation)

For short‑term tarnish prevention of semi-finished or finished products during storage and transportation.

  • Vapor Corrosion Inhibitor (VCI) Packaging:Pack brass parts with VCI‑impregnated rustproof paper or film. The inhibitor volatilizes and adsorbs onto the metal surface to form a molecular film, providing rust protection without direct contact.Ready for use after unpacking (in most cases, no cleaning needed).

Note: Select copper‑specific or multi‑metal universal types, avoiding sulfur or other components harmful to copper.

  • Rustproof Oil / Fluid:A thin layer of rustproof oil or water-displacing anti-corrosion fluid can be applied to machined brass parts.Note that degreasing may be required before subsequent assembly.

V. Surface Modification (High-End / Special Applications)

  • Passivation + Sealing Composite Process:After passivation, dip-coat with a nano-scale silane sealer or organic-inorganic hybrid coating. This greatly improves corrosion resistance (salt spray resistance up to hundreds of hours)and does not affect electrical conductivity (depending on the formula).

  • Ion Implantation / Physical Vapor Deposition (PVD):Deposit hard coatings such as TiN and CrN under vacuum.Prevents tarnishing and provides high surface hardness and decorative colors (e.g., rose gold, gun black).Suitable for luxury watches, medical devices, etc.

When selecting a specific solution, it is recommended to conduct joint tests with professional surface treatment suppliers, based on the brass grade (e.g., H62, H65, leaded brass), end use, and cost budget.
