Introduction and Application of Seamless Oxygen-Free Copper Conductors
Release time:2026-10-26Click:263
Seamless oxygen-free copper conductors generally refer to seamless extruded/drawn hollow oxygen-free copper conductors (seamless OFC copper tube conductors), which are different from ordinary stranded solid oxygen-free copper wires. Common grades are TU1, TU2 (GB/T 5231). Their American equivalents are C10200 (OF) and C10100 (OFHC).
1. Basic Definition and Composition
Manufactured from high-purity electrolytic copper, melted under vacuum or protective atmosphere with oxygen content strictly controlled, then formed into an integrated, weld-free hollow copper conductor by extrusion, cold drawing and precision annealing.
TU1: Cu ≥99.95%, O ≤0.003% (30 ppm)
TU2: Cu ≥99.90%, O ≤0.005% (50 ppm) High-grade OFHC high-conductivity oxygen-free copper can control oxygen content below 10 ppm. Core advantages: weld-free, free of oxide inclusions, resistant to hydrogen embrittlement (hydrogen disease). This is the biggest difference from deoxidized copper and welded copper tubes.
2. Key Performance Advantages
Excellent electrical conductivity: Electrical conductivity ≥100% IACS, some up to 101% IACS. Low resistivity, smaller temperature rise under high current and low power loss.
Superior thermal conductivity: Thermal conductivity approx. 398 W/(m·K). It can serve as both conductive and heat-dissipating material for integrated structural components.
Hydrogen embrittlement resistance & low outgassing in vacuum: Extremely low oxygen content prevents hydrogen embrittlement and cracking under high temperature or hydrogen/vacuum conditions. Low outgassing makes it the preferred material for electron vacuum devices.
Uniform microstructure & smooth surface: Integral seamless forming without weld defects, high dimensional accuracy. Good ductility, suitable for bending, flaring, welding, silver/nickel plating. Less prone to air leakage or cracking after welding.
Good corrosion resistance and stable low-temperature performance: Ductility remains stable at low temperatures, suitable for cryogenic and aerospace special working conditions.
Comparison: Ordinary T2 copper (deoxidized copper) has higher oxygen content and cannot be used in hydrogen or vacuum environments. Welded copper tubes carry leakage risks under high pressure or vacuum due to weld seams.
3. Main Application Fields
3.1 Vacuum Electronics & RF Microwave Industry (Classic Application)
High-power transmitting tubes, magnetrons, traveling-wave tubes, vacuum capacitors, vacuum switches, RF waveguides, inner conductors of coaxial cables, lead wires for vacuum cavities. Seamless OFC is standard for vacuum equipment requiring no leakage and low outgassing.
3.2 New Energy & High-Voltage Power
New energy vehicles: High-current busbars, hollow water-cooled conductive busbars, hollow motor conductors, charging pile high-current conductors. Hollow channels allow cooling water circulation to carry larger current.
PV, energy storage, converters, hollow windings of dry-type transformers, superconducting matching leads.
Rail transit, subway traction conductive parts.
3.3 Semiconductors & Precision Electronics
Vacuum pipelines for semiconductor equipment, RF electrodes, conductive and thermal components for chip stages, MRI coils, anode windings of medical X-ray tubes. It ensures stable signal, few impurities and low contact resistance.
3.4 High-End Audio & Communication
Hollow conductors for premium HiFi audio cables, broadcast transmitting RF cables, inner conductors of 5G / millimeter-wave coaxial cables, reducing high-frequency signal attenuation and improving signal fidelity.
3.5 Aerospace & Special Equipment
Aerospace vacuum pipelines, conductive and thermal components for cryogenic equipment, spacecraft harness conductors. Stable under extreme temperature, low outgassing and hydrogen embrittlement resistant.
3.6 Integrated Thermal Management Components
Integrated conductive & water-cooled copper parts for servers and high-power IGBTs. The hollow channel circulates coolant while conducting electricity.
4. Supplementary Remarks
Process flow: Vacuum melting → extrusion of seamless tube billet → multi-pass cold drawing → precision annealing. Available in soft, half-hard and hard tempers. Specifications cover fine capillary tubes up to large-diameter hollow conductive busbars.
Limitations: Much higher price than ordinary T2 copper; difficult processing. It is mainly adopted for high-reliability, high-current, vacuum and RF high-value-added scenarios, not for general wiring.
